Eskom reduces solar rebates

Eskom announced on 12 April 2011 that it will be reducing the Solar Water Heating rebates at least twice in the coming months.

The new-look rebate will come into effect on 29 April 2011, and is designed to subsidise the entry-level and mid-market segments, while supporting locally-manufactured goods.

Solar water heating rebates will no longer be based on system efficiency, but rather on market segment and degree of local content used in the manufacturing process.  What this means is that smaller systems, and systems produced locally will qualify for more substantial rebates than their larger counterparts and imported systems.

The new rebate is scheduled to be implemented in two phases:

Phase 1 : 29 April 2011

Phase 2: 3 June 2011

To claim the current rebate values, your solar water heating sytsem must be installed BEFORE the above-mentioned dates.  Any systems installed after these dates will only qualify for the new maximum rebate that is available from that date onwards.

Eskom’s Integrated Demand Management (IDM) programme has implemented the new solar water heating rebate system after an extensive review of the current rebate programme and engagement with key stakeholders.
